Please note: All our surgical procedures will be carried out at our in-patient hospital at Shepton Mallet, even if you have an outpatient appointment at a different hospital.

Ankle arthroscopy

This is a keyhole surgical procedure performed using an arthroscope with a video camera. Instrumentation can be used to repair damage to the ankle caused by trauma, wear and tear or through sports injuries.

Bunion removal

A bunion is a painful bony deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe which usually gets worse over time. Surgical removal commonly involves part of the toe bone being cut or removed and the bones being realigned.

Claw toe surgery

Claw toe surgery involves examining the ligaments, joints and bones in the toe under general anaesthetic. Fixing the problem can involve re-alignment of the joints, lengthening or releasing tendons and sometimes reshaping the bones. It is usually only carried out if other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful.

Removal of ganglions and minor lumps and bumps

Minor lumps, bumps, ganglions, cysts, moles and lipomas can be removed under a local anaesthetic if they are causing pain or difficulty with footwear.

Hammer toe

Hammer toe surgery involves examining the ligaments, joints and bones in the toe under general anaesthetic. Fixing the problem can involved re-alignment of the joints, lengthening or releasing tendons and sometimes reshaping the bones. It is usually only carried out if other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful.

Ingrown toenail

Surgery for an ingrown toenail is usually only carried out of other treatments have been unsuccessful. It is carried out under local anaesthetic, and involves the removal of all or just the outside edges of the toenail. Where only the edges of the nail are removed, the remaining nail is treated to prevent it from growing back. If there is an infection, any pus will be drained and you may be prescribed antibiotics.

Stiff big toe

A condition also known as Hallux Rigidus, a form of degenerative arthritis, which causes pain and stiffness in the joint where the big toe meets the foot. Using shoe pads and shoes with plenty of room may help, but surgery may be necessary if pain continues.

Total ankle replacement

Surgery involves the replacing of diseased or damaged joint surfaces in the ankle with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the ankle joint.

Minimally invasive foot surgery

Commonly known as keyhole surgery, minimally invasive foot surgery is any surgical procedure on the foot that uses the latest technology to make fewer, smaller incisions resulting in reduced tissue damage and scarring. It is often possible to carry out this type of surgery without an overnight stay.

Osteotomy

A surgical procedure that involves part of a bone being cut to shorten or realign it. It is sometimes performed as part of bunion surgery or to relieve pain in arthritis cases. It is performed under general anaesthetic.
