We appoint Ace Taxis for transport services
Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre has appointed Evercreech-based Ace Taxis to provide its transport service for patients and staff.
The service will run 24 hours a day every day of the year, and will deliver a taxi to transport patients within 30 minutes of receiving the request. This may be to take them to the hospital for pre-operative assessments or post-operative follow-ups, or to take them home following surgery. All journeys are booked by the hospital on behalf of its patients.
As part of the service to patients, Ace Taxis will take into consideration the individual needs of patients, for example those with limited mobility or who request gender-specific drivers. All drivers will be fully aware of safeguarding principles and that their vehicles display a high level of hygiene inside and out, are non-smoking and in good working order.
As well as transporting patients, Ace Taxis is also contracted to transport hospital staff to and from satellite locations (the hospital runs clinics in other towns in Somerset). The business will transport staff, medical equipment and notes in a safe and confidential manner.
Ace Taxis will also transport medical equipment and pathology samples between Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre and its sister hospitals in Bristol, Devizes, Plymouth, Southampton and Portsmouth.
Chester Barnes, Hospital Director at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, commented: “We are delighted to be entering into an arrangement with Ace Taxis for our transport services. We are especially pleased to be working with a local business. Ours is a particularly exacting brief, in that we need to ensure the safety and comfort of our patients and staff, and confidentiality for the transportation of equipment of notes. We were impressed by the level of service offered by Ace Taxis and we are confident the business will deliver our needs.”
Paul Matthews from Ace Taxis commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to supply Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre with our taxi services. We are looking forward to working alongside Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre and its outstanding team.”
Around 350 patients use the taxi transportation service at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre each year. The service is supported by a minibus service run by the hospital. Given that Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre sits within a rural environment, it is important to patients and the hospital that patients have efficient and comfortable access to the hospital and the services it provides.
Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre is the first elective surgical hospital in the country to receive a Care Quality Commission report giving an overall ‘Outstanding’ with a clean sweep of ‘Outstanding’ ratings in every individual element of the inspection grading. The CQC’s inspector’s judged the centre to be ‘Outstanding’ against the categories of ‘safe, ‘effective’, ‘caring’, ‘responsive’ and ‘well-led’ care. No other NHS, independent or private hospital CQC report published so far has the five outstanding stars on its overall rating. Only the top three per cent of hospitals in the country have been awarded the exceptional ‘Outstanding’ rating by the quality watchdog.
The services offered at the hospital cover: joint replacements (hips, knees and shoulders), general orthopaedic surgery, ear, nose and throat, endoscopy, general surgery, gynaecology, ophthalmology (such as cataract surgery), pain management, urology, and diagnostic imaging (X-rays, MRI and ultrasound).
The hospital is a great favourite with patients, and comments on its Facebook page include: “A really great hospital, fantastic”; “Love this hospital!”; “A very caring hospital”, and; “Lovely hospital, wonderful caring staff”.
